1. Niagara Falls
The first fun thing to do when you are in New York is to travel to Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is located on the border of Ontario, Canada, and New York, USA. Niagara Falls is considered to be a spectacular natural wonder located in North America. Its pure beauty and the huge number of falls attracts millions of people around the world.
If you want to get the best view and experience, we recommend going there via a boat cruise. You get to see the foaming waters. However, Niagara Falls is rather far from New York. Thus, it may take you more than a day to get there. Thus, going there by plane is only one hour. Therefore, it is a must when you are in NY.
2. Governors Island
Just across Brooklyn and the southern tip of Manhattan is the birthplace of New York which goes back to 1624. The fortification around Governors island was the key player in the Civil War where it kept Confederate prisoners. Governors island consists of several interesting buildings that belong to the Governor, the Senate, etc.
Nowadays, the island is considered to be a tourist attraction and a national monument that is being controlled by the National Park Service. Visitors can explore the colonial brick buildings that age back to 1624. However, recently they built restaurants, clubs, campgrounds to make the island habitat for today’s standards. Philadelphia is considered to be a great alternative for people who would like to see Washington DC without actually going there. For some people, Philadelphia is the little sister of New York that has its very own atmosphere and wonderful cobblestone streets and urban splendor.
Philadelphia is the 6th largest metropolitan area in the USA. Some of the top tourist attractions of the city are the Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, and Penn which is the other name of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, the largest city park in the world is located in Philly, Fairmount Park. There are a lot of ways to get around the city. Busses, trains, etc.
4. Fire Island
The Fire Island is only two hours away from New York and it is considered to be the most popular beach community in the city. A little fact, people are arguing about the name’s origin. Some believe the name came from the old days where native Americans built fire around the island and on the other hand, some believe it gets its name from the large poison ivy that lives on the island.
To get to Fire Island people mostly take ferries from the outer coast of Long Island. However, there are vehicles on the island but they are mostly emergency vehicles. Fire Island is the perfect destination for clubbers, sailors, and even beachcombers who are looking for quiet coastal wildlife. The island may be old but people have built marinas, restaurants, and even places to stay.
5. The Hamptons
The Hamptons is known to be the playground for rich and famous people. The Hamptons is mostly known for its beachside and gorgeously designed mansions. However, people can rent out a house and stay there for a few days to a few weeks depending on how much you are willing to spend for your exclusive parties. The Hamptons is a day away and 3 hours’ way by train or bus.
6. Washington DC
Washington DC is fairly close to New York. It is three hours away by train. Washington DC is one of those cities that people will want to spend the night when they get there. Visitors can take a tour of the White House, National Mall that houses the Washington and Jefferson monuments as well as congressional buildings. The nation’s capital is the perfect city for people who would like to know the history of the USA.
7. The Palisades
Right around the Hudson river are basalt cliffs that literally stretch hundreds of feet over this amazing river and it creates a sheer and vertical precipice along the river. The Palisades can be found across the Manhattan and George Washington bridge.
During autumn is when most people tend to visit the Palisades due to its thousands of beautiful red, orange, and yellow-leaved trees. If you are in New York during autumn, we highly recommend vising the Palisades.
8. Atlantic City
If you have ever played the popular Monopoly board game, you definitely know about Atlantic city and its familiar street names. On Boardwalk, Ventnor Ave, and St. Charles Place hotels do really exist and you actually can spend a night or two there.
Atlantic city is Las Vegas on the east coast. Actually, it is fun to know that it was the original Las Vegas back in the day. In fact, some of the high-end casino resorts are still in the business. Much like the old days the city is still known to be a major venue for entertainment especially when it comes down to boxing and concerts. The AC can be reached via car, train, or even a bus and it usually takes around two without traffic. Visiting Atlantic city may be a great fun thing to do in New York as it is only two hours away.
9. New Haven
New Haven is the home of the famous Yale University and it offers a lot in culture, architecture, food, and even entertainment. Along the coastline of New Haven, you’ll find a theater, lighthouse, and even a carousel. Some of the architecture in the city goes back to the 1700s and you can see the revolutionary war in the streets. In addition, there is an art district, a children’s museum, etc. From NY, it takes around an hour and a half to get there and it can be reached via car, train, or even bus. Visiting New Haven is yet another fun thing to do in New York.
